The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors (ICMAD) today is issuing a statement that it joins the Personal Care Products Council, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and consumer groups that supported a safety review by the Independent Expert Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel (CIR) of the use of formaldehyde/methylene glycol in professional hair straightening products.

The 112th Congress has hinted that the “Safe Cosmetic Act of 2011” will be reintroduced. While its Democratic sponsors may seek to reintroduce the bill in the 112th Congress it is doubtful that the House Energy and Commerce Committee, with its new Republican Chair, Fred Upton (MI), will give this bill any priority given the other more pressing matters facing the country and the fact that the bill is basically anti-business and hence bad for employment.
